Campus Profile

Most people will never have an opportunity to traverse the globe with students from around the world aboard an oceangoing campus like The Scholar Ship. This experience, by any measure, is an ‘experience of a lifetime.’

We fully understand that in order to deliver an experience of a lifetime, we need the right mix of students and staff. We must offer a distinctive academic program with practical learning outcomes for our students. We have to maintain a safe and secure environment for everyone. We need to provide innovative learning opportunities at each port of call. While dedicated to intercultural immersion, life onboard has to be fun. We have to organize social and recreational activities in a way that intercultural learning doesn’t ‘just happen,’ but rather happens as a result. What we also fully understand and appreciate is the need to create a physical environment that catalyzes every aspect of the program into a third culture. This is our vision of an oceangoing campus.

And so we set out to discover a seaworthy vessel capable of transforming into an oceangoing campus. A ship not too small and not too large. A ship equipped to be mindful of the Earth. A hull design sure to be forgiving on those trans-ocean crossings. Of course, a ship with character. A ship with ample public space, and with equally generous sized cabins. Let us not forget appropriate rooms to conduct lectures.

It is with great pride that we introduce The Scholar Ship, a classic ocean liner built for global voyages and maintained to pass the test of time and refurbished to exceed the criteria necessary to reflect our name. With numerous public rooms well suited for conversion into lecture rooms, two fitness centers, three swimming pools (two outdoor, one indoor), and extensive outdoor deck areas, our ship is ideally suited to her new service as an oceangoing campus. However, we have invested in several areas to make the transformation complete. Conversion work includes the addition of the following facilities and equipment:

  • Academic support center
  • Audio-visual equipment
  • Cellular phone network for cost-effective calling while at sea
  • Copy and print center
  • Enhanced fitness equipment
  • Learning resource center

Why The Scholar Ship?

“The Scholar Ship promises to be a microcosm of our global age:
a laboratory for global democracy. In seeking to create a truly transnational learning community, with its stress on experiential learning, The Scholar Ship represents a bold experiment in international and global education. Let’s explore this new form of learning and teaching.”
