Programs Onboard - English Plus

English Plus is a unique program for students who wish to spend a 15-week semester aboard The Scholar Ship. It gives participants the opportunity to develop their English language skills and also experience firsthand The Scholar Ship’s high-quality academic program. The first eight weeks is dedicated to general English language studies. During the second six weeks, students add some academic subjects from The Scholar Ship academic program to complement their English language studies.

Course outline

The course will:

  • review and strengthen participants’ basic English language skills, particularly focusing on active communication
     
  • make use of the destinations that the ship visits. This way the practice is more relevant and interesting, and at the same time participants learn more about many different cities and countries
     
  • allow participants to develop their language skills further during port visits, ensuring that their language practice is always practical and relevant 
  • integrate all practice so that people on the course at the same time improve their English, develop their world knowledge and greater inter-cultural awareness 
  • allow participants to take part in selected academic programs from The Scholar Ship’s course offer.

Practical details

Group size: Maximum 14

Minimum age: 18

Minimum level: Upper Intermediate (IELTS 6.0; TOEFL 525/190/70; TOEIC 700).

Hours: The course provides an average of 20 hours per week (20 x 50 minutes), but life onboard does not follow a conventional pattern of lessons Monday – Friday and free weekends. Some weekdays may be free and some weekend days may be course days. Similarly, some port days will be formal course days, and some will be left for leisure.

Schedule: The normal hours on board are 9:00 – 12:45 or 13:45 – 17:30. Students will probably work mornings some days and afternoons on others. Hours in port will be flexible, depending on the location and the activity.
