Programs Onboard

Starting in September 2008, The Scholar Ship will offer a distinctive English language program it has developed in collaboration with the world’s oldest officially accredited English language school, The London School of English, founded in 1912.

The English program offers three choices:

  • English for Life is an innovative course developed exclusively for The Scholar Ship. It teaches students practical English language skills using the many different places that the ship visits on its voyage.
  • English for World Business is a specialized course that provides students with key tools for their future business career
  • English Plus is a unique program allowing students to combine general English language studies with academic subjects taken from The Scholar Ship’s range of academic programs.

Although the English program teaching is entirely separate from The Scholar Ship’s academic program, students in the  program are fully integrated into the onboard community. They have every opportunity to develop professional and personal relationships of life-long value.

The Scholar Ship English program is a unique opportunity to combine language learning, travel and inter-cultural experience in one simple, dynamic package.

Course structure

A full academic semester aboard The Scholar Ship is 15 weeks in length. The English language program offers a total of 300 academic hours of intensive English instruction. Students may register for the full program, or for part voyages of varying lengths.

The majority of the English program is classroom-based aboard the ship but a significant part of the program takes place in each port of call, usually in the form of field trips and other activities that provide students with the opportunity to practice their English in real-life situations.

The schedule provides an average of 20 hours per week, although life onboard does not follow a conventional pattern of lessons Monday – Friday and free weekends. Some weekdays may be free and some weekend days may be course days. Similarly, some port days will be formal course days, and some will be left for leisure.
